The Sabbath.

"If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." Isaiah 58:13-14

Came across this verse a few weeks ago and it's still been ringing in my head. I wrote it in my journal so I could go back to it. And lately I've been thinking.... wondering if we should make changes in our life to keep the Sabbath a holy day. Like no Internet or TV maybe? I already try to avoid doing groceries n such. So I'm curious...

What do you do to keep the Sabbath a holy day??

  1. I am trying to do no internet (at least while the family is awake haha) and we don't have tv but not watching videos could be good. I don't know.

I know down the line this may play more into it but Anthony hates that people play sports on Sundays. I think differently (because I played softball on Sundays) - I think you can play for God and keep it holy that way. But I don't know. I don't know what God considers "holy" or not (do we do like they used to and not do anything at all - even cook?)

  2. Holly and I have been trying to keep the rest aspect of Sabbath by not working on Sunday. We don't do household chores or grocery shopping, we try to keep meals simple (often leftovers or a slow cooker meal), we don't try to get anything knocked off our to-do list. We don't expect anything productive to happen on Sunday. Instead we usually pass the day by gathering with a church, taking a walk, playing games, watching a movie, reading. Up until last Friday, my computer wasn't set up yet with my work computer in my office, so I was off my computer pretty much all day on Sunday, but it wasn't intentional to avoid any particular entertainment on Sunday. I guess we do all these things to try to honor the rest aspect of Sabbath, though I'm not certain that it does a good job honoring the holy aspect of Sabbath. We could probably work on that by setting the time aside as dedicated to God rather than merely leisure.

With Kevin's rotating schedule, you guys will have to decide if Sabbath is to be on *Sunday* (or *Saturday* to be more literal) or if can rotate with your schedule. I guess that is both a theological and a practical question to sort out.

  3. I guess part of what struck me most with that verse was "honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please". Maybe Saturday should be our family fun day and Sunday be a "way to serve others" day, whatever that might entail. Of course we serve others any time we can, but a day to really make an effort if we've been busy with our own things lately. Hmmm.... (thinking)

  4. I wish we {collectively} took this more seriously. I think it's more of a heart issue then a do x,y,z.

A very good question. Good things to think about.

Good to see you yesterday too!!!
