I've been observing and thinking... Elementary (and high school?) sports have games and meets on Sundays. All the time. I loved playing sports growing up. I was never super competitive, and I wasn't awesomely good, just average I'd say, but man, I tried one of the hardest on the team. Always. Even practice I took quite seriously. I loved the unity that comes with being a part of a TEAM and the value of learning to work together and the joy of victory. If my kids choose to I want them to also participate in sports. But on SUNDAYs, a day set aside for worship and family and rest?? Not sure what I think about that... What do you think??
And while I'm talking about sports, enjoy this short film/video about Paynee boys as they form their own football (soccer) team. So neat!
We never had things on Sundays where I grew up. It was nice not even having to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteUmmm...NO. I am sure someone will have a reason they feel is valid but in my honest opinion, NO. :) (I also played sports (basketball) and I know EXACTLY what you mean about being part of a team) but still, NO. LOL
ReplyDeleteI won't let them do sports on Sundays either. You just have to look a little more for teams that have games on other days. So far we've been lucky with soccer practices on weeknights and games on Saturdays and also basketball practices on weeknights and games on Saturdays. Basketball was through Upward, a Christian organization which is a great option if you have one near you!
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't like to see events/games scheduled on Sundays. Caleb is in tball but that hasn't been an issue yet.
ReplyDeleteWe know for sure we'll be running into this coming up as soccer in our town has games on Sunday and given that Colby is head over heals for soccer and for his age is actually quite good, there's no way I could take away that opportunity. I, too, grew up with games/events on Sunday and my family worked through it and around it. Thankfully the church we've found has multiple services ALL of which have child programs / sunday school available during the service. We've determined that should we end up with a morning game on a Sunday we'll go to the 11am service instead of our usual 9am that we have been attending. If it's a later morning game then we'll go and bring the clothes to change when we get there, just like Scott and I used to do as children. I agree that Sunday's are typically a more relaxed "family" day, however, to me allowing every member of the family have the opportunity to be involved in activities they might like and enjoy is just another way to strengthen that family bond. Plus, what an amazing way to show your children you support them in their every endeavor than to have a "family" day cheering them on at that event. Yet, also showing them you can still be a part of a faith based life by going to church, regardless of whether it's at the same time as "our usual" service we attend. Our church also has Thursday night services in 6 week sessions throughout the year. They pick a theme and do 6 weeks on thursday's from 6-7pm then take a few weeks off and move on to a different theme. So based on whether the theme applied to us at the moment we go to those too. So we love having loads of opportunities to follow Jesus and yet still have our fill of fun and family time. Sunday or not Sunday!
