This year

... We are not doing the Jesse tree and devotions. Not that I don't like it or that we won't do it again, but I'm just trying to simplify and pear down activities that cause me to feel stress or like a failure if we don't get to it each day.

... We ARE opening a new Christmas book each night.  I totally stole this idea from my friend Amanda after we visited her house.  Instead of bringing out the stack of Christmas books with all the other Christmas decorations, I wrapped each one in tissue paper.  (THAT took longer than I thought it would!) And most every night we open a new book.  The kids haven't seen them since last year, so it's a fun surprise to open each one.

... I don't have ANYTHING figured out for Christmas cards or letters!  I LOVE you all, but I kinda just don't feel doing them this year!  Anyone else like that some years???

... The kids are having loads of fun playing with these cards I pulled out again from last year! This time we did tricky patterns so instead of it just being the picture itself, it was detail like animal-person-animal-person, or blue background-red background etc

What are your traditions for this year??

  1. This year we got a second, smaller tree that Logan and I (and someday Gavin too) could decorate with "his" ornaments. Other than that, we seemed to have abandoned all traditions this year...and I feel really bummed about it, but I just don't seem to have it in me right now even though I'm trying!

  2. I don't feel like doing Christmas cards either, Sarah. So don't be sad if ya don't get one from us :)

  3. I love Christmas cards (hence, why mine are mailed already). :) But you have a lot on your plate so don't overwhelm yourself.

I think that's nice to open a Christmas book every night. I may do that with my kids...have to gather all of our books.

  4. I stole the idea from a friend of mine! Ha! I don't consider it stealing - hopefully she doesn't either, of I'm not only a thief but an accomplice to your theft, right? Or something like that.

Our kids are still loving the books, and I think we started with 35+, so we've been doing it for a while already. I wrapped "Twas the Night..." in a shiny red paper, and told them that it will be the last one we open, which will be on Christmas Eve.

As for cards...I tend to post one on facebook and email it to those who aren't on FB. I love getting them too, but just have a hard time spending money and postage on something that most people are going to throw away. And the people who I would send them to have been updated on our lives as it happens, so I don't feel like I need to tell them what's been going on all year. I do keep a copy of whatever I post, because I like to look at them myself later on. Social media has probably changed the future of Christmas cards, huh?
