(ah, the things we get excited about as we get older, huh?)

I am thankful for my husband finishing our taxes last night. (I do not know what I would do without him!!)
This is a simple idea, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway... instead of peeling things (potatoes, carrots, apples, egg shell, etc) onto a cutting board and then when done having to take the lid off the trash can so I can carefully scrape it into the trash, then put the trash can lid back on. OR directly peeling over the trash can and accidentally dropping your produce in it... I peel veggies or whatever onto a piece of paper towel, so when I'm done I just fold up the paper towel, toss it in the trash, and move on! It's as quick as the time it took you to read those words! And it certainly works for me!
Hubby and I have been running out of hangers in our closet lately. Fortunately (I guess), there's always something that's in the laundry so we've been able to get by. But running out of hangers means... new stuff has been coming in, but old stuff hasn't been going out. We certainly don't need MORE clothes and thus we certainly don't need more hangers! So today's tackle is... (drum roll, please)..to sift out some of the clothes we no longer wear AND in the same day bag them up and take them to Goodwill. Already by 7:00 this morning I had finished sorting through our closet and created a large "to-go" pile. I also remembered I have a whole bin of pre-pregnancy clothes that no longer fit. I mostly (but not quite) have my weight back to where it should be, but my figure has changed quite a bit (my boobs are even bigger, making shirts now way too short, revealing those oh-so-lovely stretch marks) and I guess my style has changed having matured with being a new mommy. Soo... as much as I would like to think that I could one day fit into those clothes, today is the day... I must let go. Even if I were to be that size again, I'm not sure that's my style anyway. So right alongside Hubby's high school jerseys will be my tiny college-day tees.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above." James 1:17
"So then, just as you receieved Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7

5 little things that would make our house a whole lot less cluttered:
1. Shoes in the closet (except for maybe the one pair being worn for the day).
2. Coats hung up in coat closet instead of the backs of our dining room chairs or draped over the couch, EVEN if we know we're going out later.
3. After laundry is done, fold it, put it away, and take basket back to basement. Just having a laundry basket left in the room makes it untidy, whether there are clothes in it or not. Instead of putting things away at the end of the day (either in the hamper or hung back up), it tends to just get dumped in the laundry basket. So if it's not even there... you get the idea.
4. Empty the dishwasher in the A.M. Then it is free to load back up as we go through the day, and dirty dishes and bottles don't get stacked up. When it's time to prepare a meal, the kitchen is ready for me. There's nothing worse than going to the kitchen to start dinner only to find that the counters covered in dishes and you have to clean it first just so you can have a place to cook! So easy, and it makes a big difference.
5. Mail in basket, bills in office organizer, and junk in trash NOT on dining room table! It's so easy for mail to be the main source of clutter. We have a fairly small house with three main "hot spots"--the dining room table, the coffee table, and the top of the piano. I set up decorations on the top of the piano to keep it from looking like a place to set "stuff" and that seems to help. And awhile ago I got a small basket for the top of the piano to put mail in since it never ever gets taken straight to the file cabinet. Periodically I sort through it, throwing out old stuff and filing away important stuff. Even still, mail doesn't get put away all the time. And we really need to work on keeping the other two "hot spots" clutter- free. Clutter really gets to me, whether I recognize it or not, but when it's clean, I truly can breathe easier and I just FEEL BETTER!
I know these ideas are basic and most people already do them, and I also know they're specific to what works for our house. But perhaps sharing these 5 "rules" will help me actually follow them! Happy Friday!!
All my life I've always said, "I just want to be a mom". Yet after high school I went on to college and got a degree and throughout those 4 years where everyone is focused on starting careers I felt bad for wanting to "just stay home". But as I was reading A Wife After God's Own Heart, I was given a whole new perspective as author Elizbeth George writes:
"I have to say that I am a homebody. Why? Because that's where my husband is, where my children were in days gone by, where my home is, and where the preparations required to teach God's Word to the women in my church (a part of my service to God's people) took place for so many years. Because that's where my heart is, was, and ever will be."
Home is where my family is! And keeping the home, taking care of children, and serving my husband are my God-given priorities! There's no shame in that at all! So today I'm proud to say I'm a homebody!
I'm a new mom and still figuring out my own tricks for keeping a home, so I'm not sure how many WFMWs (Works For Me Wednesday) I'll be able to do, but today I can share how I plan my baby's meals. (He's 7 1/2 months) In order to make sure he gets his rainbow of nutrition throughout each day AND has a good variety throughout the week, I started making a weekly meal chart. It helps me know exactly what and how much I need to buy at the store so I can get through the whole week. It's pretty obvious, the text is colored according to the color of the food. The yellow shaded box means it's a new food he's
trying and I'll have to watch for allergies.
front, and at mealtime I just grab what's in front, double-checking with the chart that I post on the inside of the cupboard door. I know, sounds elaborate for a 7 month old who doesn't care much about having variety and balanced diet, but nutrition is important and so is organization an de-stressing your life in ways that you can. So when it comes to baby food, this is what works for me! For more great tips visit Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer.
Alright, my goal is to lose these last 5-10 pounds of baby fat before summer when Baby turns 1 year. I've been working at this since the start of the new year, and my efforts have been at about 70%. I've been doing workout videos during Baby's morning nap several times a week. And I've also been making a conscious effort to drink 64 oz of water every day by filling a 64 oz Rubbermaid and making sure it's empty before the day's end. Sometimes I do well, sometimes I don't. And despite my efforts, I haven't lost ANY pounds!
Last week I was feeling discouraged and didn't work out much at all. But this week I am going to kick it back in gear and give it 100% for 2 weeks, and then evaluate. My goal is to do 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week, drink 64 oz water every day, watch my portion sizes, and go for walks on the days I can. So I pray for encouragment, discipline, and motivation. I'll let you know how it goes!

I try to look at the weekly circular online to see what's on sale before planning my meals. This week the meals I already had in mind lined right up with the sales!
