I've been very happy with Eli's school, with the area we're in, with the wonderful balance we've found in life with each of the kids and otherwise. But today, I got a letter from the school about their upcoming music concert: "Superstar" theme. The kids are invited to dress up as their favorite superstar. Lovely. So, what, does that mean there's going to be a bunch of Hannah Montana's and Justin Bieber's? Ugh... I've cringed when I've heard Eli mention that he's been singing pop songs at school. Not that this single thing is a deal breaker for us, and homeschool people, please don't pounce on me. But whatever happened to simple oldies like "Tis the Gift to be Simple". I remember singing stuff like that when I was in school. Classics are GOOD. Stick with 'em.
'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
'tis the gift to come down
where we ought to be,
and when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained
to bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed,
to turn, turn, will be our delight
till by turning, turning we come round right.
'Tis the gift to be loved and that love to return,
'Tis the gift to be taught and a richer gift to learn,
And when we expect of others what we try to live each day,
Then we'll all live together and we'll all learn to say,
'Tis the gift to have friends and a true friend to be,
'Tis the gift to think of others not to only think of "me",
And when we hear what others really think and really feel,
Then we'll all live together with a love that is real.

I have a friend whose daughters go to a Catholic school in Minnesota, and the girls came home singing "I'm Elmo and I know it" to the tune of some terrible "I'm sexy and I know it" pop song on the radio today! Ah! I agree with sticking to the classics. Much better! Maybe Eli could be someone well-known but not with his pants hanging off his bum - like Elvis. That would be fun! Or, easy to recognize, even though their music had poor intonation - the Beatles. Or popular today but for quality singing and lyrics...maybe Josh Groban and he could wear a wig of gorgeous curls. This will be fun! I'm excited to hear who he will be!
Don't you hate it?! Micah's class sang the "Quaker Hill Rap" for their assembly and Jeb esp really hated that! What's funny to me is I don't think I have ever heard that song you posted either lol
Amanda, they are only INVITED, not required, to dress up. Otherwise they are to wear "Sunday dress", so he will probably do that. When it comes to costumes, I'm just not that creative.
I've had this song (Tis the Gift to be Simple...not I'm sexy and I know it) in my head all day after reading this! It is one of my absolute favorites, so it's made me smile all day.
Aww, how fun! =)
I first heard this song at the opening number in a movie, and fell in love with it then. Just recently I found out that The Piano Guys did a version of it with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Enjoy!

Our kids have masks and capes (I got them from Etsy) and they have made up superhero names. My favorite one is their best friend Tali's: when she comes to play she's "Super Pink Pony."
That's probably lame for school though when everyone else will be dressed up in a commercial costume. Praying the Lord would give you all wisdom. And that Eli would love the songs you teach him even if he's gotta sing a bit of garbage at school. God is faithfully loving and protecting him even in this!
