Saying No to the scale...

Over the past year I have lost 25 lbs via a lot of hard work, hundreds of daily choices, food logging and exercise. It's exciting to see progress and change when you really put your mind to it, and I'm proud of where I am. But even though I don't really have more pounds to lose, I am still struggling with weight. Or at least I sure have CONVINCED myself that I am. My body is fine, but my mind has become obsessed, and I'm no longer able to truly ENJOY food or sitting down without feeling guilt or the need to "make up for it" later.

I am fighting hard to find balance. After reading this article and in an effort for this whole thing to stop consuming me, I made the difficult decision to give up the scale. Out of the house altogether, (although it still sits there right now in the bathroom).  I thought giving up the scale would be freeing--I can FEEL when I'm up and I can FEEL when I'm down, I don't need numbers screaming at me and dictating whether it's  a "fail" or "win" kind of day. Right??? But it turns out it's really hard to let go...

I have no accountability, no goal, no immediate reason NOT to cheat. And I like to cheat. I like sweets which so happen to be the #1 cause of weight gain. So now I'm swinging wildly again, in the upward direction surely. And my body feels like crap, huge and pregnant-looking. And mentally I feel like I'm losing it. I don't have things in control the way I like. I'm eating frivolously and impulsively: gluttony.

"Just stop cheating and eat right until you feel great again," I tell myself. I know this but it's easy to say and hard to do. And I'm starting to feel desperate and about to break, about to take it all back and say Nevermind. The scale is one of those things that can hold you in bondage, but at the same time weirdly provides a security you don't realize until it's gone. You became dependent on it. *I* became dependent on it. So now what?

A new beginning.
A new focus.
Something.

JOURNEY is a special word to me. Because that's what all of Life is. We never have it mastered. We never have it figured out. And this thing with weight, making it more important in my life than what it needs to be at all, is just a thing I'm working through right now...

Aside from the scale, aside from numbers or even sizes, I'm working toward gaining STRENGTH. Not just in my barbell curls but in my mind. Finding balance and being wholly healthy and well-rounded: physically, emotionally, spiritually. And hoping to focus more on the positive like this:

And above all remembering my identity is in HIM, and real beauty "is that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." (1 Peter 3:4)

Thanks to everyone who is journeying with me...

More to come, I'm sure.

Week 1

I've lost 3.3 lbs this week alone!  I'm so excited! It's always been sooo hard for me to lose any weight no matter what I try! But I determined to count calories and work out ALL WEEK and then evaluate the results, annnnnd I'd say it's working!!  Woohoo!

Here's what I'm doing....

1. Daily calorie goal is 1200-1400 daily, although trying to stay closer to 1200. I invited friends over for a food swap, and it helped me so much throughout my week.  We each bulk-prepared a healthy food for everyone to take home and have throughout the week. So each morning I started the day with one of Tanya's baked oatmeal muffins and one of Nikki's fruit cups. In the afternoon as a snack I'd have one of Stacy's energy bites (although those are dangerously good!) and as dessert I'd have one of the tiny cups of Nikki's fat-free fruit dip (I just liked it all by itself by the spoonful!) It helped so much to have something ready-to-grab!

2. Daily workout.  I hate working out but when I add my calories and it's already 800 or so by the afternoon, I know I need to burn some so I can eat a full dinner with the family. I've decided I can more easily eat low calorie breakfasts and lunches and snacks, but come dinner time I want to eat something a little more normal. I've upped my workouts from running 2 or 3 miles (usually around 300 calorie burn) to 4 miles (almost 500 calorie burn).  That makes a HUGE difference to my Net Calories (total calories for the day)! I'm also finding that working out in the afternoon is a good time of day. I really hate the getting-ready-twic-a-day thing, but if I want to workout, that's just the best time. By the end of day I'm simply out of motivation.

3. I'm trying to keep drinking water. It helps your tummy feel full and keeps you adequately hydrated. I know I still don't drink enough though. I also occasionally drink green tea with a meal. Usually breakfast in replace of my usual coffee.  Green tea is 0 calories (I sweeten it with a tiny bit of Truvia, also 0 calories) and increases metabolism.

5.5 more pounds to my initial goal and 9.5 pounds to my final goal. So that's me. What's your plan??

My first 5K race!

I slept terrible.  Grandma came to watch the kids so Carter was in our room for the night, and I don't know if he always does this, but he woke up a lot of times,  just making noise in his bed and then falling back to sleep. At one point I saw lightning and thought, Uh Oh.  When I finally got up in the morning it was raining.  "Rain or shine", the event said, so I figured we were still on for the race.  And we continued getting ourselves ready.

before the race

And now for the details...

The good:
* My new sports bra finally came in the day before the race. Was so excited to not have to just layer up old bras as I had been doing!  New bra worked wonderfully!
* The sprinkly rain stopped just before the race started and it felt wonderfully cool out!
* While we were waiting I was talking with another young mom of a 4yo who lives right near us.  Would love to have gotten her name and contact info, so I hope we cross paths again soon!
* I could see Kevin the whole way so I knew I wasn't TOO far behind him.  That made me feel good.
* I ran almost all of the race only walking a few feet of the last hill toward the end.
* Downhills were very good.  Tried to lengthen my stride and just let the hill give me a break.
* I finished strong sprinting in the last 100meters or so.
* My time was 28min50sec, several minutes faster than what I'd been running on the treadmill! Was very pleasantly surprised!
* Carter was happily clapping and squawking at everyone as they finished!
* Both Eli and Hannah are saying they want to run the 1-mile race next year!

The not so good:
* Much of the path was on gravel on the outside of town, which means I was trying to find the less muddy part of the road to run on. And being out in the open instead of zooming past houses made the race feel slower.
* Compared to the treadmill, I felt like I was trudging along slowly.  So I was very surprised at my time!
* I was just running by myself, following a cluster of three teenage girls and a young boy something like 11 yrs old with no one close behind.  Was a pretty relaxed run though I felt tired for much of it.  Not the adrenaline rush I was expecting, but that's okay.

So it's over!  Went well, did well, and now I'm happy it's done!

after the race
As for more races?  Maybe.  But I'll stick with 5Ks for now before even thinking about moving up to anything longer!

Tomorrow...

...is my race day.  I know it's only 3.1 miles and I have several friends who run half-MARATHONS, so this really should be no big deal.  And it's not really.  But I'm nervous.  I hate the whole race feel, always have and probably always will.  And I'm nervous about what it will be like NOT on a treadmill that sets my pace for me and stays on zero incline and has a fan blowing on me with a towel it holds for me whenever I need it.  I don't really care what my time is, won't be surprised if it's longer since there are slight hills n such, but I do hope it's somewhere in the vicinity of 35 minutes. My mom is coming today to spend the day with us and watch the kids during the race tomorrow.  I'm excited for THEM to watch and be a part of it.  And I'm excited to support our community and PARTICIPATE in something, as that's a rare thing being Mommy.  And I'm excited Kevin will be running "with" me.  It will be a fun morning! And as for the run, my hope is that running outside WILL be far more enjoyable than running on the treadmill.  The weather should be pretty nice and hopefully still a somewhat cool morning!  Wish me luck! I'll let you know how it goes!

Wednesday Weigh-In

Well, now I can't just post my good weeks now can I? This week I was at +0.7 lbs. Or something like that.  We had a lot of heavy restaurant meals over the weekend and I haven't run or done any exercise at all in several days, so it's no surprise.  I've been feeling pretty good about where I'm at right now weigh-wise so that's part of why I'm starting to putter out, along with life's summer busyness.  But I need to keep with it!  Race on Saturday!

Diet-wise I've still been watching it.  Trying to stay away from Sonic altogether and other greasy fast-food options, choosing low-calorie meals at restaurants if we ARE out.  Having a Carnation drink for breakfast or simple eggs and toast or something.  Also trying to stay away from ice cream treats as tempting as they are this season, and maybe make a fruit smoothie instead. So that's this week's update!

Wednesday Weigh-In

Well, it's been a couple weeks since I've done an official weigh-in because of post-vacation stuff.  Last week I was mostly maintaining and just trying to get back to where I was before vaca.  Now this past week I've really been trying to get back to my workout routine, but it's still been lacking somewhat and I'm just craving FOOD and SWEETS.  BUT, good news...

this morning I was -1.6 lbs from before vacation!
That's almost -9 lbs total so far and a rollover into the next 10 lb weight bracket. (know what I mean? without saying what I actually weigh??)

I'm pretty excited! And I CAN tell a difference, mostly in my upper body, not so much in my thunder thighs or belly bulge.  But we're getting there!

As for the upcoming 5K race... it's not this Saturday but next Saturday.  (Yikes, it's really coming up soon!!)  I drove through town trying to figure out what the course might be.  It's a tiny tiny town and I wasn't sure HOW they could get 3.1 miles out of it, so I wanted to see if going out on country roads would have to be necessary, and it's not looking like it.  Just one of the gravel roads right close to town perhaps, but we'll see. My mom's coming to watch the kids and I'm excited for them to get to cheer me on.  They love races, so it'll be fun for them to see Mommy participating!

So that's the update!  How are YOU doing???

Wednesday Weigh-In

- 2 lbs this week!!
Total -7 lbs!!
I'm getting excited about all this!

And I'm coming to enjoy running.  It's exciting to physically see myself shaving minutes (or just seconds) off of my time or to increase distance, and to KNOW I'm improving vs just doing a workout video (I'm not very good at them.)  I'm signing up for my very first 5K here in our tiny town next month.  it's part of their Father's Day chicken BBQ weekend and 1) I'm excited to be involved in something for our town, 2) It'll be fun to participate in something with Kevin since he enjoys these sorts of things, and 3) It gives me another motivation to do all this!  It's pretty flat in our town so that makes me feel a LITTLE better about the fact that I've NEVER run outside ever!  LOL Although I DO hope to run outside at least once before race day.  Ooo, I don't like calling it that--makes me nervous. So I made the major mistake of looking up what time people typically run a 5K in for their first time.  And oh boy.  Many of them run it 10 minutes faster than I do, and I was panicking for much of this week.  Trying to boost my speed on the treadmill but just not being able to go ANY faster than 34 minutes.  But I've decided, based on responses from friends, that my time actually is pretty normal, and I'll run the race anyway, doing the best that I can!

Alright, got this posted and now later today, after Eli's last day of morning preschool, my family and I will be OFF for vacation!!  See y'alls next week!!

Wednesday Weigh-In

- 1.6 lbs this week!
- 5 lbs TOTAL.
That's a mini milestone right there!
10 lbs to go!

Last week I didn't do as great with my diet, due to a couple "special" days in which we were at someone else's house.  Graduation party for our friend Mel on Saturday and Mother's Day with the in-laws on Sunday.  But I tried to compensate by doing a simple lunch or simple dinner for the other meal.  Could still do better though, and I'm starting to run out of steam on it.  But I did increase my workouts, so I was running at least 3 miles every day instead of 2.  Last night though I ran my first 4 MILES!!  I never did do the interval running cuz I just didn't like it at all.  And ya know what, if this is still working, then I'm just going to stick with this.  ALTHOUGH, I feel like my arms are a little skinnier, but the muffin is still very much there.  Contemplating what I need to add in for more ab work.  I have a workout called The Ab Diet, it's been so long since I've done that one, I don't even remember what it's like. So I might give it a try, in addition to running. Or I might add in some Shred.  Or just some good ol' crunches.  With the weather being warmer, drinking water has been much easier, so that's something!

T minus 7 days until we leave for the beach!  Pretty sure I'm not going to lose 5 lbs and make my goal in 1 week, but I'm still happy with how things are going!

Wednesday Weigh-In

When my friend Angie joined me in the weight-loss challenge, we decided to do our weigh-ins on Wednesdays, so after hiding my scale under the bed for the last couple days, this morning it was time to get it back out and see what it said to me and...

After working out for the last 12 days with only one day of rest, I've lost a grand 1.4 lbs since last week (Mon, Apr 25).  TOTAL weight loss since April 11 is a whopping 3.4 lbs!

*sigh*

That is definitely not any dramatic result, but I have to admit, it IS something.... I've been trying so hard, being very diligent about working out every evening leaving me with very little free time, and watching what I eat making sure I start the day with healthy foods like oatmeal and cutting out fast food and sweets (except for a couple random treats with the fam).  I haven't been as good as I should about drinking water--working on that!!

Last night I found the "weight loss" program on the treadmill and gave it a try, and it was TOUGH.  I found myself leaning on the rails often, and I don't like that.  I'd rather back down and do something WELL than trudge through it sloppily.  But maybe it's what I need? Go for it anyway.  For a week and see if that makes a greater difference in my weight loss, even if I don't like it, maybe alternating it with some relaxed long runs (long runs for me are only 3-3.5 miles).  So that's what I'll try this week, as well as WATER!!  Check back with you next week...

Fat-burning FOOD??

I've been working hard-core on my fitness/weight-loss goals and have worked out for 8 days in a row now!  And now recently I've been looking into the benefits of interval running and now foods that can help burn fat too.

Oh yes, you might have heard this before, but there are FOODS that can burn fat for you!!  How cool is that! "Some foods require more calories to digest than they contain. Also, some foods boost your metabolism thus causing you to burn fat faster than just diet and exercise alone"

So I was looking through the 101 Fat Burning Foods list and trying to make meal options using only things on the list, and it's so do-able!  Now don't get me wrong, there's a lot there I DO NOT LIKE, like hot peppers, eggplant, fish, sardines, etc.  But there's a lot there I normally eat anyway, like blueberries, cranberries, apples, spinach, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, turkey, and so much more!

Here are some meal ideas I came up with using only the list (granted it's FINE to not JUST do this list but I was just playing and seeing what can be made with JUST THIS):

Breakfast
1. oatmeal with fresh blueberries

Lunch
1. spinach salad topped with cranberries and nuts and an oil dressing, fresh cauliflower
2. turkey/spinach sandwich on whole grain bread, beets (I used to like them when I was kid, maybe I still do??)
3. tuna sandwich on whole grain, broccoli, apple
3. bean soup, or white chili soup

Dinner
1. pork chops with light seasonings
2. lemon-pepper chicken
3. chili

Snacks
orange (citrus fruits are even more effective on an empty stomach), milk, peaches, green tea, caffeinated coffee actually helps burn calories (but not if you load it with sugar and cream like I do!)

Check out the links and leave me some more meal ideas!!

3 MILES!

So I just started running a couple months ago, not really following any sort of plan.  I'd heard of the Couch to 5K program but I thought I'd just try things on my own.  Having a treadmill I'm able to run to music or how we have it set up in the basement with our old TV and DVD player I'm also able to watch movies, and for me having that distraction makes a huuuuge difference!  Plus I still keep it set at zero incline, which also makes a huge difference in these states of rolling hills.  I was able to knock out my goal of 1-mile no-stopping right away, I couldn't believe myself!  When I DID used to run back in the day (high school) I was just a sprinter and the most I did was one lap (1/4mile).  Then pretty soon I did a full 2 MILES without stopping (!!!), and the new goal was to run 3 miles.  And guess what y'alls!!  I did that last night!!!  I RAN 3 MILES WITHOUT STOPPING! After having done several runs with music I went back to a movie and was nearly done with 2 miles before I even knew it, so I kept going to see how far I could get and made it all the way to 3 and then stopped, and still felt GOOD!  Tired but not gasping for air--I finished with a half-mile walk as I continued to watch my movie and was sooo proud for accomplishing such a big goal for myself!  And guess what,  5K is only 3.1 miles, and I can SO do that!  Doesn't it just sound cool to call it 5K instead of 3.1??  LOL  Now no, I will not be signing up for tons of races--remember I run at zero incline zoned out to a movie or music in perfect weather conditions.  I'm not there yet, but maybe someday...

So there we have it, #11 is crossed off my 30 Before 30 List!!

27 days

Alright, guys, it's time for me to kick into high gear.  My family is heading to the beach in 27 days so I'm going to use that as my motivation to start getting into better shape FOR REAL! Cuz who wants to go to the beach for the first time in years feeling the heaviest and chubbiest in years?!  Not like I'm going to spend my days laying out in the sun; it's a family gathering in which I am SO EXCITED for, but still.  You know what I mean, right?

So here are the details...

Goal: To lose belly flab and 10 lbs before beach time.  (total weight loss goal is actually 17-20 lbs but for this time frame, 10 lbs  in 27 days is pretty hefty in itself, for me anyway) Think I can do it??

Why? So I can fit into my current clothes better and not have to buy new clothes to hide trouble spots (my un-toned stomach!)

Things I'm willing to give up for 30 days:
* coffee (except for donut days, notice how I'm not giving up the DONUTS? LOL C'mon I just like the plain kind, no frosting, so I can dunk!)
* pop (We don't EVER have any in the house except for birthday parties, but we DO end up going out quite a bit here and there, in which I almost always get a pop with it, therefore I end up drinking more pop than I probably realize. And yes, I call it POP and not soda or anything else people call it)
* home pizza.  I eat pizza ALLL the time. I just love it and every brand/restaurant has its own flavor. I won't give it up COMPLETELY cuz when it comes to friends events, with the few options we have around here, pizza is a common choice!
* Fast Food (more specifically, the fries and hamburger kind)

Exercise... Every day even if it's a casual walk. When I don't have much time I can do... The Shred (it's only 20 min) Up my running distance (also means budget in more TIME to do that) and add in some dumbell strength training.

Food choices...
* Drink more water.
* Buy lots of fruits and veggies.
* Start the day with high-protein breakfast
* Write down what I eat and count calories when possible.

To help meet my goal I need to...
* Get to bed earlier so I have energy.
* Take AdvoCare Supplements. Whatever ones I have left still.
* Try on old pants every couple days so I remember what I'm doing this whole deal for!

So here we go! This is hard for me.  I've always LOVED going for walks (practically impossible these days, or casual sports, also impossible these days) but HATED working out!  But I'm trying to learn to like it.  And trying to learn how to establish a consistent routine with it.  Soo hard to do in these early parenting years, but there IS time, it's just been a matter of committing to it and being productive!  Cheer me on! I need all the support I can get! And if you want to join in with some accountability, LET ME KNOW!!

Mommy Math

Do some math with me here...

40 + 30 + 15 + 10 = 95

That's approximately 95 lbs of stroller weight when we go for walks like this!!!! Eli's weight + Hannah's weight + Carter and his seat weight + stroller itself, not to mention any wind that we might be pushing against or children that might be moving around! So Jillian, don't you dare tell me that's not a workout!!!

Calorie Counter

I need to lose weight. About 20 lbs. My friend Mel just recently went on a 1400 calories- a-day diet (or something like that) and lost a very noticeable amount of weight. So now I want to do that too. I really haven't found much time to do my 30-Day Shred workout like I was hoping (I'm not a morning person. don't want to get all sweaty and have to shower during the middle of the day. and I like to relax in the evening with Kevin), so now I'm going to start focusing more on my diet. Recognizing I am nursing and can't make drastic changes or it will affect my milk supply. So the plan is this: eat fairly normal and see how many calories I intake on a regular day, and then shoot for eating a few hundred less than that gradually decreasing my number to 1800-2200 (which was recommended for nursing moms here). I found this website that can help me count my calories and rate the quality of each food. Pretty interesting actually. I guess wheat crackers are graded a D+! Why's that?! So as I try to decrease my calorie intake I'll naturally be turning to foods that are healthier like carrots and apples for snack instead of granola bars or cookies. I'm also going to watch my beverages. I've gotten into the habit of having coffee most mornings, and I only drink it with a LOT of cream and a LOT of sugar. Plus we've been eating out a lot which for me means a lot of soda. So. Enough of that!

It's kind of easy to say today when it's snowy out and we're not going anywhere. But what happens when we eat out or I make something that's hard to calculate calories because it's got a bunch of different ingredients.

Who knows.

But this is what I'm going to try. Have you done this? What have your experiences been?

Healthy alternatives

As part of our P90X workout, we're trying to make a few healthy exchanges in our diet. The first part of the program follows a high-protein diet. Instead of flat-out cutting things out of our menu we're trying to make some exchanges:

* Turkey bacon instead of regular bacon (this actually isn't too bad at all!)
* Scrambled egg whites instead of whole egg (the recipe says to add cheese and a little bit of milk, but I still need a lot more flavor to make this edible to me. Anyone used to eating egg whites? Have any ideas? I was thinking of making it omlette-like with green peppers n stuff, but haven't gotten to it yet)
* Ground turkey instead of ground beef (not always but some things can disguise the flavor change)
* Fresh fruit instead of canned

And protein snack options:
* Cheese stick
* Cottage cheese
* Cashews
* Pistachios
* Turkey Jerky instead of Beef Jerky

90-day Challenge: New workout routine

At the beginning of the new year Kevin and I both decided to make this a year of fitness and really work to find some sort of workout routine that would work for us and our busy lives. That's not an easy thing to do, especially when you have kids! The time is simply not there! I've tried videos before but got bored with them. It's hard to get out walking with the kids and impossible during the winter months. I'd love to have a treadmill or an elliptical machine at home, but that's just out of the question--too much money and not enough space for such equipment in the first place. Going to a gym not only means dragging the kids along or finding a separate time to go without them, but it means another bill which we just really don't need right now. So you get the idea. Just finding a workout routine is HARD. My dearest husband took the time on his own to look around on the internet and came across a plan he was eager to try and do together with ME! Woah, now that's not something to turn down, I don't care what it is! It's called P90X and is a very intense routine that cycles through 12 different DVDs targeting different muscle groups. So we won't get bored and our bodies won't get bored either! We chose to get a set of resistance bands since dumbell sets are crazy expensive. There's also a diet that goes along with it, and we'll try to follow it some but I know we can't follow it exactly. A lot of it is just not appealing food at all! But we'll try to make some adjustments to our food choices! So that's the new routine. We've done 2 days so far, and I'm definitely feeling it. I'm excited to start getting a little more fit (even if I don't look like the people on the website!!) but I'm mostly excited to have something that Kevin and I can work on together!

Weekly Challenge

I've been feeling so unmotivated the last couple weeks. It's been cold and rainy and definitely NOT spring weather!!! Grr... I did do FOUR days of my walk video but all week long I was only drinking half of my water. Seems I get one thing or the other but not both. You wouldn't think it would be so difficult. But we're back to it this week. The goal: walk video PLUS 10 minutes of abs workout AND 64 oz water/day. The scale has continued to be good though and I may have actually lost 2 or so lbs the past couple of months! I FEEL better at least!

Weekly Challenge

So last week I didn't do my challenge. AT. ALL. I just didn't. I drank my water but didn't exercise more than one day. No excuses. Just sheer laziness and lack of motivation. And to tell you the truth, I don't feel any more motivated at the start of this week either. The scale has been kind to me though so I am happy about that. And I'm also proud to say that I haven't been completely lazy and here's what I WAS busy doing (besides the usual household duties)... After one a half years of hard work, I finally finished our wedding scrapbook!!! I'm no fancy scrapper at all, I just do super simple pages and they still look nice, but it takes me days just to get one page done. Oh and we had a really simple wedding too and didn't have a ton of pictures, but still, that was a big project and I'm SO HAPPY that I've completed it! And now I'm working on making wall hangings for Eli's room using leftover fabric from making his curtains. Here's my start... This is just the top piece. There will be a layer of quilting, a backing, and then binding around the edge. I'll post another picture when I get them done!

So what's my goal for this week? Hmm, well, I should really get back on track. It's too cold to go out strolling with Eli and since I'm not feeling very motivated for this week, maybe I'll just shoot to do the walking video 5 times this week. And if I actually do a hard workout, then that's even better!

Weekly Challenge, update

Well last week my weekly challenge was to keep record of my workouts and daily water intake. The goal was 5 workouts, plus walking and daily 64 oz water. Well, here's how I did...

Mon- 48 oz water, no exercise (baby's A.M. doc appointment)
Tues- 64 oz water, walk video (short exercise, busy cleaning day for visitor!)
Wed- 48 oz water, cardio workout
Thurs- 64 oz water, no exercise
Fri- 64 oz water, strength training
Sat- 64 oz water, no exercise (errands to run in A.M.)
Sun- 64 oz water, no exercise

I did very well with the water intake but I only had 3 days of exercise and no walks really. So this week I'm going keep up with the water but focus on exercise, even if it's something simpler like the walking video or 20 minutes of pilates. 5 days this week I want to fit in at least some sort of exercise. I am excited to say that I might actually be noticing a slight difference on the scale! It's hard to tell because my weight fluctuates soo much just from day to day. Alright, well, enough blogging about it! Let's get to it!
